Debby Alphin

Debby Alphin grew up in Charlotte and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, working first in advertising and later in software design. In 2003 after raising a family, she decided to pursue a second degree in architecture and began taking drawing and painting classes in order to create an entrance portfolio. The art won out and she began painting full time. She works in both oils and acrylics and describes her abstracts as a way to create order out of chaos. She has been fortunate to study with Elizabeth Ross, Andy Braitman, Nancy Franke, Jeanette LeGrue, David Shevlino, Gary Weiss and Gary Bodner. The California abstract artist, Nicholas Wilton, has been an incredible teacher and mentor. Artist Statement: “While architecture, geometry, symbols, and anything black and white have always inspired me, they are becoming much more apparent in my art. I like a certain amount of structure as I feel it grounds my work. From there I intuitively reference my own vocabulary of icons, both real and invented to create a narrative. I gravitate to straight lines, graphic shapes, lost edges and unique mark making to create a visual story which in the end I hope is as entertaining and appealing to the viewer as it is me, the artist. The joy is in the process.”
